10 beauty lessons every woman needs going into her 30s

If you’re worried about being in your 30s, don’t be.

Sophia Money-Coutts says it’s ok not to have your sh*t together by the big 3-0, and she’s right. And if you think it means you’re ‘old’, I have one word for you: Rihanna. She hit the milestone herself this year and is still the baddest b*tch in town, so don’t sweat it.

I myself am getting closer by the second, and while I may not have gained a house to call my own, a husband or successfully raised a house plant, I have been blessed with some pretty good makeup tips in my years as a beauty editor.

The kind that will accommodate laugh lines (just try to stop me lol’ing), dark circles and skin that’s lost its lustre. And the best news? They’re mostly tiny tweaks that don’t require new products at all…

1. Blotting papers over powder

If you reach for powder at the first sign of any oily t-zone, consider swapping it for blotting papers instead. Instead of dusting on more product which can cause build-up in age-related crevices, blotting papers will keep the skin looking fresh and shine-free.

2. Avoid highlighter in your crows feet

Especially if you’re using a powder highlighter. Keep it to the tops of your cheekbones and temples, and away from the corners of your eyes. Makeup Artist and Max Factor Ambassador, Caroline Barnes, also says to consider illuminator  under your foundation in this area, to give you a more diffused glow that won’t shine a torch on your fine lines.

3. And take it elsewhere

On the contrary, highlighter can provide a great eye-lift when applied underneath the brow, so consider dabbing some in this area once you’re finished with your eyeshadow.

4. Put concealer on your masel labial folds

Not as gross as it sounds. Your masel labial folds are the two lines that run from the outer corners of your nostrils to the outer corners of your top lip. These can become darker and more prominent as you age, so pop some concealer in this area to lighten those bad boys.

5. Use light-reflecting over opaque concealer

And when choosing your concealer, opt for light-reflecting rather than opaque. It’s better for combating darkness. Max Factor’s Radiant Concealer is a goodie.

6. And don’t forget your tear ducts

Dark under eyes might be nothing new, but as you get older you darkness can also appear near the tear ducts on either side of the nose. Take your concealer here too for brighter eyes.

7. Rounded edges over harsh lines

Caroline says that as we get older, our faces become more angular. Cheers, gravity. “So if you want to look younger, you need to add softness in your face, like rounded flushed cheeks, a rounder softer lip, nothing hard, pointed or overlined.”

8. Proper skin prep

Upping your skincare routine is a give in the older we get, but it’s not just a nighttime thing. To get your makeup to sit better on your skin, you really need to hydrate and plump it with moisturising products first. Otherwise, your foundation will be slurped right up.

9. Choose warmer tones

A tip that will be slightly different for everyone depending on their skin tone, but as a general rule, skin becomes lacklustre as we age, so adding warmth will make it appear healthier. Think more yellow-toned foundations, caramel blush and brown-toned shadows. The aim is to cheat a holiday. I’m currently obsessed with Zoeva’s Caramel Melange Eyeshadow Palette.

10. Use your fingers to apply products

Brushes and beauty blenders are great, but nothing beats the warmth of your own fingers for seamless looking skin. Use them to really work in your face creams, foundation and cream blush.
