GLAMOUR Editor-In-Chief, Asanda Sizani shares her travel guide to international travel hotspot, Hamburg.
I spent 3 days of last week in Hamburg – my first time visiting Germany’s second-largest city. Hamburg is rich in history and is a compelling metropolitan mix. It comes alive in summer, with lots of events, festivals, food, art, and culture. As I was limited for time to explore, this list is some of what I managed to see.
Built in 1879, the Völkerkunde Museum provides an overview of different aspects of cultures around the world, in the past and present. If you visit between this month and 19 August, you’ll catch the “Forms of Flow” exhibition, which I attended. It explores design histories between Africa and Europe, featuring renowned African artists, designers, and creators such MaXhosa by Laduma and Black Coffee (South Africa), Fundi Bots (Uganda) and Ernst May (Germany) among others. As you walk in, you will see beautiful coffee table books of fashion and art, such as Africa Rising by our own Marianne Fassler.

I had brunch here with Sarah Nakintu of the label Kintu New York. The food, service, and décor was fantastic. It’s a hidden gem in the center of Hamburg where great food meets art and decor. Their farm to table concept started off as a grocery store that evolved into a restaurant serving freshly made pastries, condiments, and healthy but delicious home cooked meals. Their organic chocolate and teas make for great gifts too.

If you’re into luxury vintage, to shop or just to browse, check out. I had lots to chat about with the store manager who spent a few months living and studying in Cape Town. Discover vintage Hermes, Vuitton, Dior, Rolex and Chanel to name a few.
Kennel & Schmenger
Check it out for unique sneakers which feature bold designs but understated branding.
Uzwei is a concept store located in the beautiful canal and Galleria Mall area in the city center. Here you’ll find great shopping and a relaxed vibe. Uzwei exclusively stocks brands such as Acne Studios, Stella McCartney, Comme des Garçons, and Balenciaga, alongside Instagram-approved, boxed everlasting roses in the deli attached to the concept store.
This historic Hamburg luxury department store has recently undergone a design update making it a one-stop shop and a major contender for the latest beauty, accessories and designer trends. I took time to browse as many stores as I could manage here, trend spotting, people watching and sharing cute finds on @glamoursa ‘s Insta Stories.
A beautiful store that stocks brands such as Off-White to Gucci all under one roof. It’s well curated, inviting, and the sweeping staircase adds dramatic flair to its décor.
Hamburg Travel Tips
I enjoyed walking through the city comfortably whether day or night. Dress comfortably, try to take the train or walk more, and cab less in order to get a real feel of your surroundings.
