Move over Charlize! Meet the local talents who are making it abroad

South African celebrities are striving for bigger and better things and this means making a name for themselves abroad. From having their face plastered across international magazines like Time magazine, or Forbes list of richest celebrities in the world or even claim to have taken a selfie with P.Diddy, but some of these home-grown talents can tick those off their bucket list. Here are some of our locally produced names who are making it big abroad.

Trevor Noah

Award-winning hit show TV host, bestselling author, international with supreme and now the subject of a movie about his life. With none other than Lupita Nyong’o playing his mother, Patricia, Trevor Noah is nothing short of brilliant.

Black Coffee

Nkosiunathi Maphumulo has overcome a slew of challenges to become a legend in the world of DJing. His achievements include numerous local and international awards, two chart-topping albums, collaborations with the likes of Alicia Keys, and spinning for Diddy and Giovanna Battaglia Engelbert. Terry Pheto

Since her debut on-screen as Miriam in Oscar-winning feature film Tsotsi, Terry has gone from small-town actress to big-time movie star, even featuring in the legendary soapie, The Bold and Beautiful.

Pearl Thusi

From humble beginnings to the world’s stage, Pearl Thusi is slowly making her mark. Her recent debut on American TV series Quantico and hosting Lip Sync Battle, Pearl is definitely making her home country proud.

Nomzamo Mbatha has been approached by some of the biggest brands in the world, some of them being PUMA SA where she was named their brand ambassador as well as Neutrogena SA but this does not only come from being a pretty face. Cassper Nyovest

A high-school drop-out at 16, an award-winning musician at 27, Cassper Nyovest has three albums and over 10 awards under his gleaming belt. And, in addition to being the opening act for hip-hop giants like Kendrick Lamar and Nas, he set new standards last year when his own show filled Joburg’s FNB Stadium – a first for both SA and African hip-hop.
