There’s a conspiracy theory that Sam Smith and Adele are the same person

The Internet is home to some really out-there conspiracy theories. Some are obviously falsehoods, like the old classic about Avril Lavigne being replaced by a look-alike named Melissa Vandella. Others, like the one about Sharpay being the real victim of  High School Musical, are a little more persuasive. Every once in a while, however, there comes a conspiracy theory so convincing it really makes some noise on Twitter. A one making the rounds this week claims that London-born soul singer Adele and London-born soul singer Sam Smith are, in fact, the same person.

Now, never mind the few glaring discrepancies, like how they’re four years apart in age and 11 trophies apart in Grammy wins. This theory has other kinds of evidence in mind: when slowed down (or sped up), they sound like the same person.

The first person to put forth the auditory evidence (or at least the most viral to do so this week) is Twitter user @jesse21valona, who had the vinyl edition of Adele’s 2015 hit “Hello” for the Internet’s amusement. When @jesse21valona slowed down the record, they noticed that Adele sounds suspiciously like Sam. You’ll have to listen for yourself to decide whether it’s convincing, but more than 300,000 Twitter users seem to think so.

Anyone notice that Adele isn’t at the Grammys this year? It’s because Adele and Sam Smith are the same person and you’ll never see them both in the same place at the same time

So what about the other way around? Well, when @jesse21valona sped up Sam, the results were much less convincing, with some users saying it sounded a lot more like Halsey. Twitter user @notsohugingbear did the same, with more or less the same results

Did you know that when you slow down Adele it’s actually Sam Smith pic.twitter.com/SysXOoQgZY

But that’s just with records. When Twitter user @TheExpus altered the pitch of Sam’s “Stay With Me,” well, the resemblance was certainly uncanny. They might be on to something here. Of course, plenty of people have been joking if they’ve ever been seen in the same room together.

so uh. that theory that sam smith and adele are the same person, just pitched is definitely true. heres my proof: pic.twitter.com/ZPrhhxsHBy

There ain’t no pics together so you have a valid argument pic.twitter.com/INpJbqXeaE

How long have I been saying Adele & Sam Smith are the same person. Literal years.

Cleary, this theory is just a bunch of bananas. But taking a listen to all these slowed-down and sped-up tracks sure gave us just a  moment of doubt. Let’s just hope that soon we can see Sam and Adele perform together to truly dispel these rumours.
