Why everyone is talking about Sam Smith’s powerful “coming out” ballad
Following his critically acclaimed 2014 debut album In The Lonely Hour, Sam Smith has released his sophomore album, The Thrill Of It All. First thoughts? FLAWLESS. And we mean the entire thing. But even the best of albums have a stand-out track and on this one, it’s ‘HIM’ – an emotionally charged coming out letter.
The song, which has already become a firm favourite among fans, is about the challenges of being a religious gay man. The lyrics show Sam, pleading with the “Holy Father” to let him love who he wants to love without judgement.

Talking about the track in an interview with NME, he said: “That song is a coming-out song from a boy to his dad. It’s just a general story. It’s not my story. I wanted to make that song for my community, for the LGBT community,” and that, he did. The song’s powerful messages has resonated with many fans who have taken to Twitter to applaud him.

The Thrill Of It is Sam’s most vulnerable record to date. In fact, it’s so personal that the Oscar winner has described it as “dangerous.” So, if you haven’t got around to listening to it yet, you know what to do this weekend…
