The first explosive trailer for The Assassination of Gianni Versace is here

Photography: YouTube/FX NetworksOne of the first glimpses of The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story we received was Penélope Cruz’s physical transformation into Donatella Versace. Photos of the actress in a blond wig surfaced on the Internet several months ago, and people flipped out—in the best way possible. She was the spitting image of Ms. Versace in the 1990s. A teaser that dropped soon afterwards confirmed Penélope was going to be a standout on the show, which is entering its second season. And now, the full trailer is here, and it’s, even more, proof of Penélope’s brilliance.

“He was a creator. He was a genius,” Penélope as Donatella says in the trailer. “I will not allow that man—that nobody—to kill my brother twice.”

She’s talking about Gianni Versace, of course, whose 1997 assassination by 27-year-old Andrew Cunanan became international news. Versace’s murder is the subject of American Crime Story this season—and if this trailer is any indication, we’ll receive more insight than ever before on what led up to it, the aftermath, and its cultural impact.

Darren Criss is chilling as Andrew Cunanan, who somehow manipulated and lied his way into Versace’s inner circle. Édgar Ramírez plays  Mr. Versace, and Ricky Martin plays his partner, Antonio D’Amico. Max Greenfield, Annaleigh Ashford, and Finn Wittrock also have roles in the series. Unsurprisingly, these actors are all favourites of Ryan Murphy, who’s executive-producing the series.

The Assassination of Gianni Versace looks slightly campier than the first season of ACS, The People v. OJ Simpson, and that’s to be expected. The fact that it centres on the fashion industry and takes place in Miami lends itself to more flamboyant aesthetics—and it looks amazing.

The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story premieres on FX January 17, 2018.
