How much caffeine is too much?

If you’re a coffee lover, there’s nothing like that first cup in the morning– strong, rich, and guaranteed to give you the get up and go you’re looking for. But how much coffee should you be drinking throughout the rest of the day, and is there such a thing as too much?

Millions of people rely on coffee to give them an early morning boost, and it’s easy to see why. The stimulating effects of caffeine have been proven to increase alertness, contribute to physical endurance and performance, and can help you to think more clearly, too. Of course, as with most things in life, coffee and caffeine need to be used in moderation for optimal results.

How much coffee do you drink?

Up to four cups a day. Believe it or not, up to four cups of coffee a day (400mg of caffeine) seems to be the safest amount for adults, at least according to research conducted by the International Life Sciences Institute. So drink up!

More than four cups a day. Any caffeine consumed over the recommended amount could result in unpleasant side effects, such as headaches, insomnia and irritability among others. If you’ve started to experience any of these, your caffeine intake could be the cause.

It goes without saying that caffeine isn’t recommended for children, adolescents or pregnant women, but if you drink up to four cups a day and you’re feeling fine, there’s no reason why you can’t incorporate your caffeine intake into a healthy diet. Just watch how many teaspoons of sugar you’re using though. If you’re trying to lose weight, then black coffee is always best.

So don’t feel guilty the next time you reach for your morning, afternoon or evening cup of joe – just keep your daily intake to moderate levels, and you can enjoy every sip like the coffee lover you are!
