Watching your child leave the nest and go off to University is hard for any parent, including Barack Obama. The former US president has revealed that he cried when dropped his eldest daughter, Malia, off at Harvard University on her first day.
In a speech at the Beau Biden Foundation’s charity event for the Protection of Children in Delaware earlier this week, Obama admitted that it was a “rough” moment.
“For those of us who have daughters, it just happens fast,” he said. “I dropped off Malia at college, and I was saying to Joe and Jill [Biden] that it was a little bit like open-heart surgery.”
However, he did manage to fight back the tears until he and wife Michelle Obama left the University campus. “I was proud that I did not cry in front of her,” he added. “But on the way back, the secret service was looking straight ahead pretending they weren’t hearing me as I sniffled and blew my nose. It was rough.”
