The internet is losing its mind with Taylor Swift’s Reputation album reveal – but who are the ‘snakes’ she’s referencing?

It’s been a busy week for Taylor Swift. Hot on the heels of winning her law suit against the DJ who groped her at a signing (and then sued her for the loss of his job), she removed all the content from her social media channels, including her bio, link and profile pictures, and subsequently uploaded a series of captionless snake gifs, which led to the announcement of her next single, and new album,  Reputation.

Suffice to say, everyone has gone WILD. We’d been wondering where Taylor Swift had gone for ages, and now she is baaaaaack.

It’s particularly interesting on Instagram, where her posts have been set so that no comments can be left underneath them. Last summer she was widely trolled with the snake emoji following an epic fight with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian over his song ‘Famous’.

Swift took umbrage at West referencing her in the song, only for Kardashian to release recordings on her Snapchat taken from a phone call between West and the singer in which she apparently gave him his blessing to do so. On the same day, Kardashian subtweeted snake emojis at the singer, which led to a flood of trolling on Swift’s accounts.

Subsequently, Instagram gave Swift early access to a set of tools which have now been rolled out more widely. They include the ability to block certain words (or emojis), to put comments from friends at the top, and use predetermined word lists to keep your comments clean – and banning comments altogether.

(In a nice twist, Buzzfeed has found that Kim Kardashian has now blocked the snake emoji from appearing on her own Insta.)

Swift’s new posts are a clear reference to her feud with the Kardashian-Wests (even Justin Bieber joined in at one point), and the album’s title, Reputation, suggests that it will be themed around appearances, social media, maybe even her recent law suit.

The first single drops tonight – bring it on.
