Sophie Turner says she got a role because of her social media following

Sophie Turner was a relatively unknown actress when she scored the role of Sansa Stark on  Game of Thrones. In the six years since the popular HBO show premiered, Sophie’s career and popularity have skyrocketed. The 21-year-old star has 1.35 million followers on Twitter and a whopping 5.4 million on Instagram. People are just as obsessed with her as they are with  Game of Thrones.

This level of exposure certainly has its downsides, and they’re pretty obvious. You lose a certain level of privacy after fame; everyone scrutinizes your every move. But there are positives, too. For one, you have a voice that people actually listen to. Celebrities have the ability to effect change in a way that most people just don’t. There’s power in having a large following; it can help you change the world.

And, apparently, it can help you get work — according to Sophie, at least. In her new interview with  Net-a-Porter, Sophie revealed that her large social media following helped her book a recent film gig.

“A lot of what I have achieved is about timing and luck, but it is also, and I hate to say it, about a big social-media following,” she said. “I auditioned for a project, and it was between me and another girl who is a far better actress than I am. Far better. But I had the followers, so I got the job. It’s not right, but it is part of the movie industry now.” (Sophie didn’t specify what film she was referring to. She has four in the pipeline:  BerlinI Love YouHuntsvilleTime Freak, and  X-Men: Dark Phoenix.)

Sophie is a very talented actress, so we’re sure this decision wasn’t strictly based on her social media footprint. However, the concept of “more followers, more work” is interesting. When companies see 5.4 million followers, they see 5.4 million sets of eyeballs that can absorb the product they’re pushing. They think the exposure will result in more sales—which is probably true in many cases.

Of course, this doesn’t mean people with fewer followers aren’t deserving of amazing opportunities. Who knows? A director could take a risk on an unknown actress, and she might become the next Sophie Turner.
