Diversity was the big winner at this year’s Oscars with nominations for people of colour at an all-time high. Suggestive of the spirit of inclusion, the red carpet was a fashion who’s who with couturiers appearing alongside ready-to-wear designers on the backs of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
Here are our best-dressed ladies of the evening, in order of trend:
Old-Hollywood glamour
Taraji P Henson
in a sleeveless black Dior gown.
Glitter and gold
Octavia Spencer
’s Marchesa gown was a surprise choice, because Tadashi Shoji usually dresses the actress for the red carpet. The Marchesa girls did a fabulous job with this tastefully embellished dress. Likewise, Emma Stone
in Givenchy looks as if her character in La La Land could easily have worn her fringed gown.
Honourable mention goes to Jessica Biel
in Kaufmanfranco and Chrissy Teigen
in Zuhair Murad.
Big (and) red
Viola Davis
in Armani topped a lot of lists and, as it turns out, the dress was only the beginning as Viola took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in
in iconic red Valentino couldn’t have looked any better. The custom gown satisfied the big expectations for the fashion it-girl’s first Oscar appearance.
White(ish) square
Naomie Harris
Ralph & Russo dress made it one of the more contemporary looks of the evening.
