Stars slam Donald Trump over trans ruling

Beyonce, Lena Dunham, Brie Larson, Katy Perry, Ellen Page and Caitlyn Jenner are among the stars to have hit out after President Donald Trump withdrew protections for transgender youth in public schools.

A host of celebrities have called for support to “protect trans youth” after the new US leader withdrew protections for transgender students in public schools, which previously let young people use bathrooms and locker rooms corresponding with their gender identity, as he insisted states and schools should make their own decisions without interference.

Sharing a link on Facebook to a campaign from GLSEN – an organisation working to end discrimination, harassment, and bullying based on sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression – Beyonce wrote: “#LGBTQ students need to know we support them. Share your support to #protecttransyouth at glsen.org/100days & put #KindnessInAction GLSEN (sic)”

And Girls creator Lena vowed to match any donations made to the Ruth Ellis Center, a facility in Detroit which assists homeless and at risk LGBT young people.

She tweeted: “Let’s fight hate & ignorance with love for trans teens, who are already facing steep odds and who need our support to grow and THRIVE.

“I’m matching all donations up to 50k to the Ruth Ellis Center @REC_detroit cc @allycoalition @jackantonoff Tweet me your donation receipt! (sic)”

Caitlyn – who is transgender – is a vocal Republican party supporter, but denounced the new president.

She said in a video shared on Twitter: “I have a message for the trans kids of America, you’re winning. Very soon, we will win full freedom nation-wide and it’s going to be with bipartisan support.

“Now I have a message for the bullies: You’re sick.

“Finally, I have a message for President Trump, from, well, one Republican to another — this is a disaster, and you can still fix it. You made a promise to protect the LGBTQ community. Call me.”

Actress Emmy Rossum slammed the decision as having been made out of “fear and hatred”.

She tweeted: THIS IS EVERYTHING WRONG WITH THIS ADMINISTRATION. @POTUS ACTS OUT OF FEAR AND HATRED OF EVERYTHING HE DOESN’T UNDERSTAND. #RESIST (sic)”

Juno star Ellen Page – who is lesbian – slammed the “cruelty” of the ruling.

She posted: “We need to protect trans youth and stand up against this cruelty that hurts our kids. Support @Translifeline (sic)”

Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson branded the changes as “disgusting” and “unacceptable”.

She tweeted: “This is disgusting. This is unacceptable. I #StandWithGavin and every Trans person who deserve nothing less than protection and equality. (sic)”

And Katy Perry urged and trans people who were “struggling” to seek help and support.

She wrote: “Trans friend, if you are struggling tonight, please reach out to @TrevorProject and @Translifeline. Equality for all! #ISTANDWITHGAVIN (sic)
