Love writing? Read this!

Wendy Goldman RohmDo you have a writing dream, want to work with your creativity, explore stories? Best-selling author, poet, mentor, teacher and literary inspiration, Wendy Goldman Rohm, shares insights into her upcoming Cape Town Writer’s Retreat.

You’ve presented two previous workshops in Cape Town. What are your goals with your Writer’s Retreat?

I love nurturing emerging writers and helping them get published globally. It started about 15 years ago, when I was invited to present an honourary Masters Tea at Yale University. I was told that what I taught was valuable and not being taught anywhere else. That encouraged me to keep teaching, and so I began presenting writers workshops when I had the time.  The workshops gradually went global, and I now do them a few times a year in many countries.

What will happen at your Cape Town workshop?

The full schedule can be seen on the Schedule Page of my website www.CapeTownWritersRetreat.com, on the Schedule page. Writers of fiction and nonfiction participate —  some are highly accomplished, published authors, and others are just beginning their first work.  The workshop is tailored to the needs of those present, and I present a series of dynamic sessions to explore aspects of narrative, including character, point of view, setting/place, voice, belief systems, theme, and dialogue.

What are the benefits of doing a writing workshop?

The writers who attend have breakthroughs during the workshops, as we take raw material and ideas and encourage them to discover the most powerful essence of their best work.

What should participants bring?

A notebooks and/or laptop. Outside of that, you only need to bring yourself!

How are the days structured?

We start with a Continental breakfast, and everyone introduces themselves and their goals for the week. We then launch into the sessions with a break for lunch at a local restaurant. (The workshop will be held in the centre of Cape Town, with great restaurants in the vicinity!). There are optional evenings soirees too.

What preparation is needed and is there homework during the workshop?

No preparation needed and no homework!

What about real beginners at writing? Or is this for experienced writers only?

All are welcome. The workshop is tailored for where you’re at. Some writers are just beginning to develop their ideas, and others in the midst of completing a work in progress. I work with where each person is at. I also offer a 12-week online Book Development course. (Information about this is on my website.)

The Cape Town Writer’s Retreat is taking place from 6 – 10 February 2017 at a private loft on Long Street, Cape Town. To register, visit www.CapeTownWritersRetreat.com or email  [email protected].
