13 Dresses from 2016 that’ll be etched in our memories forever

It takes the right gown, at the right time, worn by the right person to create a fashion moment that’ll go down in sartorial history.

And while 2016 has seen it’s fair share of questionable looks, there have been a few gowns that’ll stick with us forever; from Claire Danes’ Cinderella dress which took on an entirely different form in the dark, to Bella Hadid’s eye-popping Jessica Rabbit look and Kim Kardashian’s sock masquerading as a dress.

We look at the who, where, what (and our chosen wow-factor score) for the most memorable dresses of 2016…

Who? Alicia Vikander

Where? The Oscars 2016

What? A buttercup yellow custom-made Louis Vuitton gown

Wow-factor?8. Alicia’s dress was made for a Best Supporting Actress winner – and people naturally made the comparisons between Alicia and Beauty and the Beast‘s Belle.

Who?Claire Danes

Where? The Met Gala 2016

What? A blue Zac Posen

Wow-factor?10. On the red carpet, her Zac Posen dress was gorgeous, a classic Cinderella frock, but then the lights went out and the mic was dropped. WHOA. The dress lit up from head-to-toe, and without the Big Fat Gypsy Wedding vibes.

Who?Bella Hadid

Where? Cannes Film Festival 2016

What? An Alexandre Vauthier silk red dress

Wow-factor? 9. From the eye-watering thigh split to the open back and Jessica Rabbit-esque pose, this dress won’t be forgotten in a hurry.

Who?Kim Kardashian

Where?  SS17 Paris Fashion Week

What? A Balmain body stocking

Wow-factor?6. Not everything in this list is memorable for the right reasons. Kim Kardashian’s nearly naked crocheted number blew up Twitter and a collective “Is that her actual -?” swept the nation.

Who?Blake Lively

Where? The Cannes Film Festival 2016

What? A baby blue Vivienne Westwood Couture gown

Wow-factor?10. Blake hit top marks when she swept the film festival red carpet as Cinderella. The dress sparked comparisons with the princess by the bucket loads and Twitter went into a Disney frenzy.

Who?Bella Hadid

Where? NYC hotspot Up&Down for her 20th birthday

What? A low-slung miniskirt and a chainmail top by Fannie Schiavoni

Wow-factor?7. The supermodel’s see-through top sent eyes popping, especially with the unmissable addition of the star-shaped nipple pasties.

Who?Michelle Obama

Where? At the White House for the presidential couple’s final state dinner

What? A gold chainmail Versace gown

Wow-factor?9. The fashion moment was one of the most memorable of the year, as the First Lady saw out her administration in style. Donatella Versace was also thankful for the opportunity, saying on Instagram: “I am humbled and honoured to have had the opportunity to dress the First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama. Thank you, Michelle, for all the things you have done for America and for the world, and especially, for empowering and inspiring women everywhere”. It was quite a moment.

Who?Kendall Jenner

Where?1920’s-themed restaurant Delilah for her 21st birthday

What? A LaBourjoisie dress covered in Swarovski crystals and worth an estimated $9,000

Wow-factor?7. Kendall Jenner’s birthday outfit won major style points from us, particularly as it gave a nostalgic nod to Paris Hilton’s 21st birthday outfit over a decade earlier.

Who?The Duchess of Cambridge

Where? The first night of the royal couple’s Tour of India

What? A royal blue Jenny Packham gown

Wow-factor?8. Kate looked to her hosting country for fashion inspiration with this stunning gown. To get the dress just right the embellishments were completed in India.

Who?Zoe Saldana

Where? The Met Gala 2016

What? Stow-stopping Dolce & Gabbana

Wow-factor?10. Zoe ruled the red carpet in this dramatic peacock-inspired gown.

Who?Margot Robbie

Where? The Oscars 2016

What? A gold Diane Von Furstenberg gown

Wow-factor?7. Margot took unlikely inspiration from an Oscars golden statue for her Academy Awards look, but it worked.

Who?Kim Kardashian and North West

Where? In New York heading to a Kanye West concert

What? In matching silver sequin Vetements dresses

Wow-factor?9. The mother-daughter duo served us the best #twinning moment of the year.

Who?Gigi Hadid

Where? The Fashion Awards 2016

What? A custom dress/trousers hybrid by Versace

Wow-factor?6. Gigi turned heads by channelling a beautiful shell, and we were totally digging it.
