Inside New York Fashion Week: The Carolina Herrera show

Beauty Director Michelle Brownlee Smith went backstage with TRESemmé. Here, she shares her experience and the hair tricks she learnt.

The fashion

If you’re looking for pieces that are feminine, timeless and luxurious, Carolina Herrera is your go-to designer. For her spring/summer 2017 collection, she added a modern spin to her favourites, like a gingham blouse adapted to a shoulderless dress. Her evening dresses (made in denim and monochrome) were the most lust-worthy pieces on display.

The vibe

Shown at The Frick Collection, an art museum in the Upper East Side only steps from Central Park, the collection instantly transported viewers into an era of pure elegance. Inside, it’s pretty and peaceful, with a leafy courtyard accented by a fountain and surrounded by columns. But backstage, the energy levels are high as the dresses are all bagged and lined up on rails. Carolina is there in her signature white shirt and black midi, checking the line-up and final details. In the hair and makeup section, it’s pumping as a team of hairstylists, lead by TRESemmé expert Orlando Pita, are tightly cramped into one room. Each is drying, styling, spraying and bumping elbows while makeup artists work adjacent to them and film crews and photographers try to document it all.

The hair

Inspired by Japanese origami, Orlando blowdries, straightens and preps the models’ hair using TRESemmé Keratin Smooth before creating a chic bow. “The look is graphic,” he explains. “Carolina wants something young, groomed and ‘done’. She likes a woman to look like she spent time and effort.”
