Supermodel hair secrets

Meet runway sensation, cover girl and designer favourite Sessilee Lopez.  She talks to us exclusively about her hair secrets.

How do you take care of your hair?

I used to be the girl who would damage her hair and not think twice about it. It wasn’t until I met a few hairstylists who changed my outlook on hair, and now I visit the salon once a week for a wash and style. Every two weeks, I get some sort of deep-conditioning treatment or an oil treatment for my scalp to help with moisture.

Have you had any hair disasters in your past?

Plenty! Once I was getting ready for a big event and had to do my own hair and makeup. My makeup was flawless, but I decided to use a hot comb for my hair – one of those old-school ones that you heat on the stove. I didn’t give the comb enough time to cool off and burnt off a massive piece of my hair at the front of my head right next to my parting. I couldn’t hide it, so I never made it to that event, and I’m still trying to grow that hair back.

How do major hair changes make you feel?

I’ve experienced many different looks as a model, and I don’t have control of many. I really don’t mind major hair changes – it kind of comes with the territory of being a model.

What is your day-to-day hair routine?

On a good day, I wake up to my hair set in a silk hair scarf from the night before. I may touch up my weave with a flat iron on low heat and use product to tame my baby hairs. When I’m not working, I keep my hair and makeup low key.

Tell us about your relationship with your hairstylist

I have four hairstylists around the world. In New York, I rotate between Dante Bladshaw and Ro Morgan. I’ve known those two for quite some time now, so we are at the point that when I sit down in their chair, they already know what to do. In Toronto, I use Aisha Ebony who is first and foremost a friend, but also a hair genius. In Los Angeles, I depend on Alexander Armand to keep me in tip-top shape. He’s who I call when I need to travel with a hairstylist because he’s the best travel buddy and knows me extremely well. We have our own weird secret language, we’re that close!

If you could describe your relationship with your hair, what would it be and why?

I have a love-hate relationship with my hair: some days, I’m really impressed with its condition, and then there are times when I get mad at my hair because I want it to grow faster. I also tend to get bored because a weave feels like you’re married to the look.
