Barely a week after Donald Trump’s presidential win, the US GLAMOUR Women of the Year Awards took centre stage in Los Angeles to do what GLAMOUR does best — celebrate women!
“We all thought we would be standing here under very different circumstances,” said actress Tracee Ellis Ross, who was the host for the night. But as Hillary Clinton said in her concession speech: we must accept this result and then look to the future.
As the first female candidate to be nominated for president by a major US political party, Hillary Clinton was a clear favourite in the world of fashion publishing, receiving GLAMOUR editor in chief Cindi Leive’s endorsement. After a tribute was made to the presidential runner-up, it was time to hear from the GLAMOUR Women of the Year winners, a diverse group of inspiring and incredible women (plus one man!). Here are our favourite quotes from the night.
Cindi Leive: “Some of the best mentors in life are your own crew of women.”
Zendaya: “Ladies, you are the leaders. You’re the future. We need you. I’m with you. We’re all with you.”
Miuccia Prada: “To all the women, who struggle and fight for their freedom, independence and their job, there is still so much to do.”
Bono: “I say to the president-elect, look across to women. Make equality a priority. It is the only way forward. The train is leaving the station – be on it or be under it.”
Christine Lagarde: “No matter how much sorrow or sadness that we feel [about the world’s suffering], we have to continue that fight. We have to grit our teeth and smile.”
One of the #BlackLivesMatter founders, Patrisse Cullers: “It is our duty to fight for our freedom. It is our duty to win. We must love each other and support each other. We have nothing to lose but our chains.”
Gwen Stefani: “I was in a pool of tears one year ago. I didn’t think I could get back up, but I knew I had a responsibility.”
Ashley Graham: “This is for the girl who got into a bikini for the first time this year… For the girl who said, ‘No, I’m not going to lose weight for you, boyfriend.’”
