Man Candy Monday

Say hello to up-and-coming DJ, Hendrik Joerges. Based in Durban, the 20-year-old is quickly becoming one of the biggest names to emerge out of the SA dance music scene, with many of his songs, including his remix of Rain by Mark Stent, Pascal & Pearce and Astryd Brown, playlisted on numerous local radio stations.

GLAMOUR caught up with Hendrik to find out more about his life when he isn’t in the studio making music, or pleasing huge crowds at his jam-packed shows.

What would you say is your best attribute?

My sense of humour. I like to be funny, no matter what situation I’m in (Not literally, because in some situations humour wouldn’t be appropriate… I’m sure you can think of a few situations). But generally, I like to laugh and make people laugh!

Who and/or what inspires you?

Internationally, my biggest inspirations are Porter Robinson and The Chainsmokers. Porter Robinson has a really innovative sound and The Chainsmokers have the perfect ratio between dance music and pop music. I also get really motivated when I see how my music friends around me progress, but I think the biggest factor that motivated me to work especially hard on my upcoming music, was when my remix of Rain by Pascal & Pearce, Mark Stent and Astryd Brown was playlisted on 5fm. I feel like that was a turning point for me.

What’s your idea of a perfect date?

It may sound cliché, but my idea of a perfect date would be going to a quiet restaurant somewhere in Cape Town in a bay, watching the sunset and then going for a walk along the beach at night. That would be perfect.

What fills the spot at the top of your dream destination list?

There’s so many, but I’d really like to check out Alaska. It may not be the most exquisite place to go, but even since I was young I’ve always enjoyed looking at pictures of the snow-topped mountains, the forests and the beautiful lakes.

What’s your favourite drink?

I don’t drink very often, but my favourite has to be a good G&T. I’m definitely going to have tried every Gin & Tonic recipe there is soon!

Do you have any regrets when it comes to past relationships?

My only regret is when I was 14 and I had so many “girlfriends” all the time. I would boast to my friends that I had the most good-looking girlfriends, but when I met up with them, I would be too shy to even speak to them! Luckily for me, that has changed.

What are you reading at the moment?

I just finished reading I’m not Scared by Niccolò Ammaniti, who is an Italian author. Such a brilliant author! I couldn’t put the book down.
