Get festival ready with Matthew Mole

SAMA-nominated artist and headline act at Rocking the Daisies and Oppikoppi, Matthew Mole knows a thing or two about music festivals. Here he shares his tips, what he’s looking forward to at Superbalist X Rocking The Daisies this weekend and the inspiration behind his latest album  Run.

Tell us about your first time playing at Rocking the Daisies

It was three years ago, when I first starting playing shows, and I got a last minute opportunity to perform on the main stage. It wasn’t the best slot, but I was so amped to play in front of such a large crowd.

What are you most looking forward to at this year’s festival?

Out of all the festivals in SA, Rocking the Daisies is my favourite, so I’m really excited for this weekend and have put a lot of effort into my live set. Being part of the line-up is an honour, especially because I don’t really play a lot of Western Cape festivals. Some of my friends are also performing, like Gangs of Ballet and Desmond and the Tutus, so I’m looking forward to supporting them and having fun. There’s also a new band called Opposite the Other – they’ve only just started releasing music and trust me, they’re going to be huge. I’ve only witnessed the lead singer live, so I can’t wait to see them in action!

What are your festival tips?

One thing that I always forget is that it’s hot during the day but the evenings are freezing. Don’t forget to pack warm clothes and a jacket and to drink a lot of water. See as much as you can and don’t just stick to the main stage. There’s an electronic dome, comedy theatre, beach bar and green village. If you’re camping keep your belongings safe in the lockers provided.

What was the inspiration for your album

It was inspired by my family, people who I’ve crossed paths with along the way, and relationships – I got married a year ago.

What’s your favourite song?

There’s a track called ‘Light’ that’s a bit more electronic than what I’m used to writing, with a cool R&B vibe as well. I like it because it’s so different.

Who are your musical influences?

I’m quite eclectic, but the music that inspires, motives and gives me ideas is associated with bands that are doing unpredictable things. Icelandic band Jónsi is very creative, and on one of their albums, they incorporate animal sounds, like birds flying or animals running, into the music. It’s unique.

Matthew is performing this Saturday at 2:45 on the Rocking The Daisies mainstage.
