Who doesn’t love a man that can cook and bake? Well, prepare to swoon over the gorgeous Devin Michael Jones! Sous Chef and Pastry Chef at the luxurious Ellerman House in Cape Town, the Durban-born hottie is known for his infectious smile, easygoing nature and passion for work.
During his free time, Devin can be found wine tasting in Stellenbosch, running on the promenade or climbing Lion’s Head. We caught up with the chef to learn more about his life outside the heat of the kitchen.
What’s your best attribute?
Many of friends would say my eyebrows! But I would say it’s my ability to always make people laugh and smile. I love making people happy so much, that it’s sort of a personal mission to always keep them laughing.
What inspires you?
My parents are my inspiration in life. After everything they’ve done for me, I aspire to succeed just to show them how grateful I am. When it comes to my work, I am inspired by so many things – from blogs and colours to the people I work with. Some dessert ideas come to me while showering, so there’s really no telling when inspiration will strike.
What’s your idea of a perfect date?
It could be anywhere from a walk on the promenade to a coffee shop or bar on Bree Street. It’s all about conversation for me. I love to talk so it’s important that my date can keep up with that. Oh, and there should be lots of laughter obviously!
Do you have any regrets when it comes to past relationships?
I’ve always struggled with being comfortable in my own skin and realising my self-worth, leading to me always putting others ahead of myself. The biggest lesson I’ve learnt is the importance of putting yourself first, no matter what. A good partner is someone who wants you to reach your goals in life, and who you want to see fulfilling their goals.
What fills the spot at the top of your dream destination list?
The pastry chef in me wants to go to Paris to marvel at all the delicatessens, patisseries and sights the city has to offer. My absolute dream is to spend a month hopping around Europe, spending the most time in the eastern countries.
What’s your favourite drink?
This is the easiest question ever. Gin! And anything it involves. I spend a lot of time at the gin bars around town.
What’s your favourite thing to cook?
I’m always making large portions of roast vegetables which get me through the week! No matter what I’m making, I really just enjoy cooking. I cook by feel and do what smells or tastes right instead of following recipes. And I love cooking for friends and family – just another way to make people happy!
