An inside look at cosmetic surgery

With rapid new research, development and products in the beauty industry taking place, we no longer have to dread getting our first line or wrinkle. However, our lotions and potions can only do so much – so should we be turning to cosmetic enhancements instead?

GLAMOUR speaks to Dr Zak Schabort, founder of the nationwide Cosmetic and Dental Emporium, President of The South African Soft Surgery Institute, and doctor to both Hollywood and local stars, about the latest developments and whether it’s really worth it to go under the needle.

What are the latest developments in cosmetic enhancement?

Soft surgery, which is a non-surgical umbrella of treatments, is something to look out for. We’ve recently seen the launch of Plexr, a device that uses plasma to perform minimally invasive removal of excess skin, wrinkles, scars and even tattoos. Other trending developments are 4D facial threading and sculpting, anti-ageing dentistry and needle-shaping.

Facial threading is a fairly recent development – what are the key points to know about it?

Threads are fantastic! It’s a great way to perform minimally invasive mini-facelifts. The results are subtle yet remarkable. It’s important to understand that the treatment aims to tighten certain areas of the face through a variety of different types, lengths and sizes of threads. The threads dissolve and a natural change in the tissue tightness takes place over time as the thread is replaced by collagen.

When it comes to cosmetic enhancements and anti-ageing, what are the first steps to take?

My approach is first and foremost from a dental perspective. This means I first create a foundation of skeletal and dental corrections. Once we’ve achieved a beautiful smile, we continue on the client’s beauty path with soft tissue sculpting, wrinkle reduction and other minimally invasive techniques.

What are the most popular procedures requested by Hollywood stars?

The Hollywood stars aren’t the right group to look at for cosmetic enhancements. Many of them are in the spotlight for negative results. For example, the Kardashians look like they use beestings for lipgloss because they have a lot of fillers. Renee Zellweger has also received a lot of criticism for her facial work, which left her looking nothing like her former self. The true stars out there are using subtle enhancements to reach and maintain their natural beauty potential.

Which procedures have proven to be popular in South Africa?

SA is in line with the global trends set by America and Europe. Fillers and Botox had a big influence and set a strong trend for many years. South Africans now have better access to information and a wider variety of procedures, and many want to explore the latest techniques.

Is Botox still worth doing or has it been overtaken by other approaches?

Botox has not been overtaken but it has found its place when done by the correct person. It’s also being supplemented by other techniques, so you no longer get the frozen look.
