Love Minnie’s statement earrings? Here’s where to get them!

Minnie Dlamini’s earrings on the cover of our September issue don’t get more exotic in look or inspiration. Jewellery designer Ida Elsje tells us more.

Known as much for her engagement rings as she is for her avant-garde jewellery and accessories that have dangled from gazelle-like necks during many a fashion week, Ida Elsje’s highly creative pieces are instantly recognisable.

The traditional head and ear decorations of the people of the Omo Valley in Southern Ethiopia inspired the Omo Valley Earrings that Minnie wears. “In this earring, I used many shapes of flowers forming and oval halos,” says Ida. “The tribes of Omo Valley use flowers, leaves, twigs and face and body paint made from natural pigments such as red ochre to adorn themselves. I love the structural shapes of the headpieces and other accessories as well as the patterns of the face paint.”

Having just returned from Capri, Italy, Ida is currently working on a summer collection of earrings and necklaces using natural coral and turquoise that she collected on her recent adventures along the Med. While we can’t wait to get a glimpse of the new collection (watch this space!) Ida shares her fail-safe tips for accessorising. “Wear less, two or three accessories that compliment each are enough, each item should make a statement, which is a great way to get an overall curated look.”

Check out our three favourite pieces by Ida in the gallery below.
