Want a pet? Consider this first!

They’re cute, playful and the perfect companions but sometimes we don’t realise the responsibility associated with having a pet. Here’s what you need to know before adopting your new best friend.

1 It takes time

Pets take a lot of time and energy. If you live alone and work long hours, it’s not fair to leave your furry friend alone for a long period of time. If you’re really keen, then get a dog walker or pet sitter to ensure your BFF receives interaction and exercise.

2 Life and style

Any animal you get should be suitable to not only your lifestyle but your surroundings too. If you live in a tiny apartment, a large dog is not the obvious choice. You don’t want your pet to develop health issues, be bored or destroy things. Imagine how frustrated you’d be staring at the same four walls all day! Large animals belong in big places with lots of outdoor space.

3 Love  does cost a thing

The adoption or buying fee is just the beginning of your pet expenses. Food, grooming, veterinary bills and boarding kennels when you travel all add up.

4 It may get messy

Even when they’re fully grown, having to clean up after your pet is inevitable. From accidents in the house to soiled or torn furniture and chewed-up shoes, these are all a day’s work in a pet owner’s life.

5 Planned parenthood

Sorry to be a buzzkill but you can forget spontaneity when planning a trip or vacay. You’ll need reliable friends, relatives or money to pay for a boarding kennel or pet sitter whenever you go away for more than a day.

6 Ah-ah-achoo!

If you or any of your family members have allergies, certain animals won’t be appropriate for your home. Read up and assess the sustainability of specific animals and breeds for your family. Spend some time with a pet you’d like to get beforehand, as you don’t want any surprises once you’ve adopted.

7 Put on the training wheels

Be honest with yourself: do you really have the time and ability to train your pet? Some pets, such as dogs, require a lot of training while others won’t need any because they stay inside their cage or tank. There are plenty of pet schools but you’ll have to be present when training takes place.

8 Do your homework

Pet ownership should never be on impulse. It’s not fair to the animals, especially if they get abandoned. Do adequate research on the type of pet you’d like and prepare for a lifelong commitment. It really is like marriage – except your other half can’t talk back!
