Have you heard Lira’s new album?

She first captured our hearts with her 2003 debut album  All My Love and now, 13 years later, hot on the heels of her announcement as brand ambassador for Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, she’s released her sixth studio album entitled  Born Free. GLAMOUR catches up with the beautiful songstress and  The Voice judge.

What was your inspiration for this album?

I had been contemplating the idea of freedom, especially as far as our generation is concerned. I believe it’s so much more than a state of mind and a state of being – it’s something that we need to define for ourselves and actually live.

Why did you choose to title the album  Born Free?

It’s an interesting thought to consider – we’re all born free to choose who we want to be and how we want to respond to life. It’s not just a political ideology; it’s about realising that we are always free to become who and whatever we choose.

How long did it take to complete this album?

It was about two years of contemplation, four months of songwriting and two months in the studio.

What is your favourite song on the album?

Oh, that’s tough to say because it largely depends on what’s going on in my life at any given time. ‘Sekunjalo’ is my favourite this week, but I think ‘Return to Me’ has been a constant favourite.

Who are your musical influences?

I’ve been largely influenced by the music I listened to while growing up. I love Stevie Wonder and was inspired in my own life by his lyrics – he actually made me want to become a songwriter.

Who would you like to collaborate with next?

I’ve worked with so many local stars throughout my career and am about to work with Karen Zoid. I also recently collaborated with Arno Carstens. The talent on  The Voice excites me and I’d love to work with Jono Grayston, Zoe Modiga and Jeremy Olivier. Internationally, John Legend, John Mayer and Sade would be my ideal collaborators.
