How to create modern Hollywood waves

The Jason Wu fall 2016 collection wooed us with its elegant design and focus on efficient tailoring. But what really stood out for us was the youthful hair which perfectly offset the elegance of the collection.

The beautiful ‘do was created by Paul Hanlon for Moroccanoil. There was a bit of naivety reflected in the undone ends to make it feel young and raw. A side wave was added in to make it feel a bit highbrow/lowbrow with a nod to old Hollywood glamour of the ’40s.

There was also a level of masculinity set against the casting of new faces with the younger girls. It felt raw, contemporary, easy and organic.

Paul has shared step-by-step instructions, so you can recreate this catwalk look at home!

1 Prep

Prepare your hair using a volumising mousse and comb through with your fingers.

2 Texturise

Start adding texture to your hair by creating waves using a hairstyling iron. If you have naturally straight hair, apply hairspray section by section to help create texture.

3 Part

Using your fingers, comb your hair into a messy side part. Next, use your iron on the front section of your hair to create a finger wave effect.

4 Shape

Comb your hair using a wide tooth comb and set the hair with flat clips. Use hairspray as needed to secure the hair. Create a wave on the other side as well and set it with flat clips. The waves should not be clean and perfect.

5 Define

Go over your hair with a blow dryer to keep the shape compact and to control the volume on the ends. Define and separate the ends using a serum.

6 Finish

Finish with a tiny bit of oil to add a layer of shine and protection to your hair.
