Burn The Floor, the show that revolutionised the image of dance, returns to South Africa, its “home away from home”, for the fourth time: performing at the Opera Theatre of The South African State Theatre in Pretoria from April 27th to May 15th; the Baxter Theatre at the Baxter Theatre Centre in Cape Town from May 19th to June 5th; and the iZulu Theatre at the Sibaya Casino in Durban from June 8th to 19th.

The original concept of Burn The Floor grew from an electric display of ballroom and Latin dancing at Sir Elton John’s 50th birthday party in London, March 1997. There, producer Harley Medcalf discovered the ballroom dance world and its charismatic people, with their deep intensity, commitment, discipline, burning passion and total love of the ballroom art form.

Initially, Harley’s idea of a new theatrical ballroom production sent shock waves through the ballroom dancing establishment. For decades, ballroom competitions had been performed behind closed doors, as a pastime for the privileged. And well before reality television embraced it with such shows as Dancing with The Stars and Strictly Come Dancing.

Burn The Floor today remains focused on its ballroom origins, but this new edition to be seen in South Africa, Burn The Floor: Fire in The Ballroom, choreographed and directed by Peta Roby, has more surprises in store and promises to blow the roof off the theatre! It has the same rebellious spirit as the previous editions, though more daring with a theatrical rock angle – including music from Santana, Janis Joplin, Christine Aguilera and Led Zeppelin.

Weylandts

The Weylandts Cuban Tufted range consists of a 4 Seater Sofa (R79 995) and Cuban Tufted Bed (R39 995).

The sofa is grandly proportioned with a low seat, plush padding and all-over button tufting. Exuding comfort on a grand scale, its lavish style recalls the classic Chesterfield, however, its squashed-off arms and rakishly low profile imbue it with contemporary style. The Cuban headboard is much like the classic gentlemen’s club sofa – it cushions you in comfort and invites you to linger.

These items are made by a pair of Weylandts’ skilled artisans and takes up to several days to upholster a single sofa. To create the iconic diamond tufted effect, premium upholstery is bunched and folded four times before being secured by a single button. This painstaking process is then repeated no fewer than 300 times making the Cuba sofa the epitome of contemporary home furnishing.
