The fashion verdict on Beyoncé’s Lemonade album

Beyoncé’s new visual album, Lemonade, is still the subject of much hype three days after its release. It’s ferocious, strong, empowered, snarling, commanding, regal even.

What she wears is an important message to communicate all that. Her heavily considered wardrobe is nearly as important as the words themselves.

Lucy Walker, fashion editor:“Full marks for the full Gucci look. Beyoncé proving she’s a major fashion player and most definitely one of Alessandro Michele’s girls.”

Ella Alexander, fashion features editor:“If you have full access to new season Gucci, it may as well be an embroidered yellow cropped suit and a shirt covered with serpents. It’s a look that means business. She looks like a fashion girl version of Medusa or a badass Mobster.”

Charlotte Lewis, shopping editor:“Tailoring… A classic. For autumn/winter 2016, we will see the suit delivered in a whole rainbow of colours (forget about black), but Beyoncé is ahead of the game with this yellow number and shows you don’t have to be afraid to wear colour.”

Ella:“Nothing says you’ve risen above something and moved on that a self-possessed expression and a dress that looks as grand as anything a Tudor Queen would have worn. The African print is amazing.”

Charlotte: “ A Cinderella dress with a very full on print. I sort of don’t know how to describe it! I think this may be one of those things that only Queen Bey can pull off. Us mere mortals should avoid!”

“I think this album is a love letter to black women. An hourlong ‘I love black women, I love your struggle, I love your tenacity, I love your will to win, I love that you’ve turned lemons into lemonade’ special. I couldn’t even count how many black women were part of this visual album. Lemonade is pure black excellence.” –@lrpeoples. Lucy:“Ticking off another major SS16 trend with this off-the-shoulder, ruffled number. Not sure about the camo trousers, though… I would have gone for a tailored flare.”

Ella:“I love the off-the-shoulder top she’s wearing here. Teamed with the camo trousers, it’s all very relaxed but still quietly strong.”

Charlotte: “ I am with Lucy on this one; the top should have been with a tailored trouser or a classic Levi’s jean maybe, but I do love the dramatic sleeves.”

Lucy:“Eek looks like real fur and I’m not a fan. If it’s fake, then bravo Bey.”

Ella:“I’m going to ignore her coat because it’s probably real, but what with the coat and the braids she looks like a boss. It’s a look that demands a lot of swagger, which Bey has in droves.”

Charlotte “I’m not into the fur, but I am into the multiple small gold hoop earrings she’s wearing. Piling on the earrings can often look a bit too much, but Beyoncé knows to keep the earrings simple and classic.”

Lucy:“Beyoncé gives a fashion-forward nod to the streetwear trend with this zip detail hoodie. Very Vetements…”

Ella:“The fashion world is very excited about streetwear at the moment, whether tracksuits or hoodies, but Beyoncé wears it with an air of regality. HOW?!”

Charlotte: “ Streetwear is huge this season and for next season. The simple hoodie is hard to wear one and look chic. Trust me I am still trying and failing! Beyoncé nails it.”

Lucy:“It’s yellow, it’s ruffled and it’s FUN. What’s not to love about this Cavalli number? My favourite  Lemonade l ook by far.”

Ella:“I raise my hat to her for being one of the only women not to be overshadowed by a flamboyant Cavalli gown. And what better to smash up your cheating partner’s car in than a ruffle yellow gown?!”

Charlotte: “ Another trend nailed. The ruffle dress is THE dress for summer and she wears it SO well! To me this is classic Beyoncé… seriously this is a showstopper.”

Lucy:“Leading the way in this subtly sexy uniform number. It’s nice to see her in something so restrained.”

Ella:“This is such a Puritan, pared-down look. I’m with Lucy, it’s great to see her work a less decorative dress.”

Charlotte:“This is sort of like a school uniform you wish your school had made you wear (not the bottle green number I was forced to wear). It’s not something you would imagine Beyoncé in but she looks beautiful.”

Lucy:“Very Picnic at Hanging Rock – prairie girl goes feral. I’m into it.”

Ella:“This looks like a dream prairie sequence. I need that dress.”

Charlotte:“Ethereal and exquisite. And every other synonym in between. This look is heavenly.”
