5 Must-see acts at the 2016 Cape Town International Jazz Festival

The annual Cape Town International Jazz Festival is nearly here and we can’t be more excited! Here are the five performers we’re dying to see.

1 Muzart & Khuli Chana

What happens when you combine a SAMA-nominated pop sensation with an internationally-lauded singer-songwriter, humanitarian and rapper? Pure gold – or so we can only imagine! Muzart and Khuli Chana join forces at this year’s jazz fest, combining layers of jazz, pop, gospel, soul and Motswako for an otherworldly sound.

2 Cassandra Wilson

Not only is she one of GLAMOUR editor Pnina Fenster’s favourite performers, but Grammy-nominated Cassandra has a string of awards that proves she’s here for the long haul. We can’t wait to hear the new and creative ways she’s managed to merge jazz, vintage blues, country and folk into her signature sound.

3 Sheila E.

In an industry where male instrumentalists reign, this singer-songwriter has proven her chops by being an acclaimed drummer and percussionist. Hope we get there early to be front and center of her set as she pounds out those keys!

4 Elsies River High School

Can you believe that a mere eight years ago, the Department of Arts and Culture funded this little band as a community project? Now, as a regular on the itinerary at the Jazz Festival, the award-winning jazz band also boasts a full choir  with their own set of impressive accolades.

5 Hicham Telmoudi

We’re holding thumbs that Hicham performs some of his hits from his album  Aji Nwerik Bladi, which loosely translates to ‘Come, let me show you my country’. The album showcases key elements of Moroccan music varieties, including a new perception of the 5/4 rhythm of his tracks.
