It’s officially awards season. During this time statues and stylists, and couture are everywhere being traded, coveted, auctioned, and sometimes stolen – but there are only a few major red carpets that get the most attention. In Hollywood, the three big ones are The Golden Globes, The Grammys and The Oscars.
The Golden Globes is in a unique position. It isn’t as big as The Oscars, but it also isn’t as quirky and costume-y as The Grammys. Celebrities always walk a fine line on the red carpet because their looks have to be the perfect combination of polish and embellishment. That’s why going classic for this red carpet was in style. Last night’s 73rd Annual Golden Globes saw a red carpet filled with a blending of periods and opulent grace. Here are our best dressed:
All Black
Black was a major trend last night on the red carpet, but everyone who wore the color did something interesting. Certainly the most alluring had to be Lady Gaga
in her custom Versace long gown with a small train. For the singer who in earlier years, had made a name for herself in fashion with bold and fantasy-driven garments, this is a classic departure with a grown up sensibility. Valentino did especially well with their black offerings on Kirsten Dunst
in black Grecian velvet, and Emilia Clarke
in a black caped gown with lace overlay.
Metallic and Jewel
Metallic and jewel tones made the biggest impressions with Melissa McCarthy
at the top of the list. Her blue bohemian-style, 70s frock was metallic magic – and was designed by the actress. The fit was perfect and there was a mini slit at the knee that flirts the line of sex bomb and Old Hollywood siren. Julianne Moore
in metallic Tom Ford was brilliant. The designer used an elaborate fabric to construct a classic silhouette with sleeves, which are always beautiful on the red carpet. The velvet detailing at the shoulder and neck put it in the classic category. Zendaya’s
layered Marchesa in Marsala and lace made her a standout – which is ironic, because the singer/actress usually wears edgier designers. Somehow, this look didn’t date her.
Cape, Cut, and Leg
Some actresses stuck to what they knew, which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing – especially in the case of Cate Blanchett
. The actress’ custom Givenchy was absolutely breath-taking. Though it might have been a bit extravagant for the Golden Globes and maybe would have worked better for The Oscars. The dress, mostly fringe, was definitely an attention-grabber and it’s the kind of detailed gown that Cate Blanchett always wears better than everyone else. Jennifer Lawrence
, one of the faces of Dior, wore the label again in a red gown with cutouts and a black neck. She was one of the only actresses to wear red this year and she did it well with a modern and young-feeling take on the red red carpet dress.
was one of the winners tonight on the red carpet and in the ceremony in her white Stella McCartney. The long cape was the biggest part of the look and even had its own moment on stage when the actress had to tell someone to “get off of my cape.”
But the most shocking (in the best possible way) red carpet choice was definitely Jennifer Lopez in her mustard, yellow Giambattista Valli gown. With a slit that went all the way up to the thigh, it still toned down the sexy elements that Lopez is known for. There was nothing transparent about this look. The only bling was in the shoes, clutch and jewelry. The gown had a cape and train – and her breasts were covered. If this is the new demure Jenny from the block – we’re up for it!
