3 Steps to prep for that half marathon

2016 is here! And we bet your New Year’s resolutions are on your mind… A new year means new goals, and why not make your 2016 goal a half marathon? Everyone seems to be doing it, right? So why not you?

Whether you are new to running or looking to take your running to the next level, following the right steps in getting started is the best way to prepare for success. Here are three important aspects to consider before you start training.

1 Pre-training

Before you begin a training program, allow for a few weeks of light running to allow your body to ease into and prepare for training. Slowly start increasing your total weekly distances by no more than 10% each week. Grant Whaits, Biokineticist at Virgin Active Personal Trainer, says that “when training for a half marathon you should look at multiple programs to find the one you feel most comfortable with based on your current level of running. Personal Trainers are great for helping you find the best exercises that will improve your stride”.

2 New shoes

Be sure to get a new pair of running shoes! Don’t be afraid to spend more than you normally would on a new pair, as these are meant to endure great distances. Look for a local running speciality store and chat to the sales assistant who will find you the right pair and potentially give you a tip or two as well.

3 Find a running route

Choose a flat one! Conquering your first half marathon is tough as it is without adding the challenge of hills. If you consider courses with thousands of runners, you will also find more support from fans and other runners. So the more runners, the better! Before you begin training find good running routes, especially for your long runs.
