We caught up with Juliet Harding, lead singer of the Cape Town-based band, to talk about the band and the Jameson Vic Falls Carnival.
GLAMOUR: How did the band form?
Juliet: Myself, Ben Peters and former member, Raiven Hansmann, started the band in 2011. We wanted to make live electronic music, but noticed a shortage of live venues where we could perform for people often. We adapted our show for the clubs and started making remixes of the band we were in before, Jack Sharp and started gigging. We discovered there was a demand for dance music mixed with live music. Eventually we had to make a decision of whether to stick with Jack Sharp or push GoodLuck. The people spoke and it’s been a crazy five years ever since.
GLAMOUR: How would you describe your sound?
Juliet: It’s live electronic, but there’s elements of different types of genres. We’re inspired by what’s around us. We love to capture sounds that other people wouldn’t necessarily put into music. Our second album was recorded in the desert and we included all the organic sounds we found, like zebras, into our songs.
GLAMOUR: What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Juliet: I’m a huge fan of Pharrell Williams – his songwriting and what he stands for. Opening for him when he performed in the country was so meaningful and fun.
GLAMOUR: Who would you like to collaborate with locally?
Juliet: One of the bands that I really wanted to collaborate with and have now done so, is Black Motion. It was a match made in heaven, we just instantly clicked. They are two of the coolest and most humble guys in the industry. The song that we created, ‘Kota’, was really incredible because it’s straight down the middle – half them, half us – a total collaboration of sounds.
GLAMOUR: Who would you like to collaborate with internationally?
Juliet: Imogen Heap. I know it’s a bit of a weird one, but we love her approach to production. She has an album which is made from the sounds in her house, which is really interesting. Her music has lots of layers and depth, making a song with her would be educational.
GLAMOUR: How do you feel about performing at the Jameson Vic Falls Carnival for the first time this year?
Juliet: Ben was actually born in Harare and has only been back once since he left as a baby. It’s going to be really special because his family is coming out to see us.
GLAMOUR: Whose performance are you most looking forward to?
Juliet: Mango Groove. When I was a kid I was the biggest fan in the world and one of the biggest fights I ever had with my best friend was over Claire Johnson’s signature. We were at her concert with only one piece of paper (hers) and one pen (mine). Claire signed it and we almost broke up as friends trying to figure out who should keep it. I lost the battle and I’m still bitter over that!
