Deciding against its formulaic strategy of sexy models in exotic locations, instead it has cast 12 brilliant women shaping our world. The line-up comprises basically a long list of statement-making women – Patti Smith, Serena Williams, Fran Lebowitz, Yoko Ono and Amy Schumer just to name a few.
Shot by the legendary Annie Leibovitz herself, the images will take the form of candid portraits which offer insight into the personalities of these great women.
Amy Schumer is photographed wearing just a pair of pants, part of a concept conceived by Leibovitz that the comedienne has “missed the fully-clothed memo”. Schumer knew nothing about the ideas until the day of shooting.
“I told her my idea and asked if she’d be comfortable with it,” said Leibovitz. “And she said, ‘Of course, I love my body.’ Then the moment she picked up her coffee cup – that was all real. No one was supposed to look like they’d tried.”
And Schumer was pleased with the results: “I’ve never felt more beautiful or more like myself.”
For the first time ever, Pirelli has opted for brains, as well as beauty.
