Spoilt from top to toe!

Summer may be here but the drying effects of winter wreak havoc on our nails and cuticles, making Spoilt Hair & Nails’ mani and pedi bar the ideal stop for you! Located at the back of their beautifully decorated and modern hair salon in Portside Centre on Green Point’s Main Road, Cape Town, get ready to sit back, relax and get thoroughly pampered. Spoilt nail treatments range from their Express Manicure (R150) to the Deluxe Pedi, but what we’re really excited about is their new Medi Heel Pedicure (R300), an anti-ageing treatment that will leave you feeling as though you’re walking on air afterwards.

First, a tonic treatment on a cotton pad is applied to your heel and left on for 10 minutes. This immediately softens the heel and works on the outer layer of the epidermis to remove dead skin cells and draw out toxins. The blacker the cotton pad is after it’s removed, the more toxins you had in your foot.

Next, a neutraliser is applied to neutralise your skin after using the tonic, followed by an exfoliating foot scrub which is left on for 5-7 minutes. The scrub helps improve the appearance of wrinkles and other signs of ageing on your feet, as well as leaving them feeling silky soft and smooth. After a quick foot rinse in warm water, it’s time for the foot perfector which ensures a perfect nail-polish finish for your pedicure. All that’s left is picking which nail colour you want and snapping a shot of your terrific new toenails!

Spoilt Hair and Nails nail technician, Elizabeth Kurebwa, talks tips, trends and tricks for your nails.

What are the key nail trends for summer?

Round shapes are in this year, but be sure to keep your nails short or medium in length – long, sharp nails are so ’80s! Experiment with colours like white, shocking violet, lavender, purple, lilac, green, orange, pink and peach – they are much softer hues for summer.

What are your tips for ensuring your manicure lasts and lasts?

To get your manicure to last, oil your cuticles and nails daily. TRY The Body Shop Almond Nail and Cuticle Oil Pen(R150). Wear cotton-lined rubber gloves when you’re doing household chores, especially when working with water or harsh chemicals. If you’re skipping the salon step and doing your own nails, invest in a quality, longlasting nail polish, like CND Vinylux Nail Polish(R190).

Do you have any general nail-health advice, especially with the change in season?

Good nail hygiene is key to looking after your nails, so always keep your fingernails dry and clean. This prevents bacteria from growing under your nails, and prolonged contact with water can contribute to splitting. When cutting your nails, use a clipper to trim them straight across, then round the tips using a nail file. Moisturiser is key to maintaining the health of your nails, especially when transitioning from winter into spring, so rub a hand lotion into your nails and cuticles throughout the day. TRY Revlon Nail Care Anti-Aging Hand Cream SPF10(R100). A nail hardener, like Mavala Scientifique Nail Hardener(R222), is a must to help strengthen your nails.
