Human backpacks on the catwalk at PFW!

He was the designer who sent male models down the runway with their junk hanging out, so when Rick Owens launched his latest collection at Paris Fashion Week, we were anticipating an eyes-agog moment. We weren’t disappointed.

While the American designer’s monastic collection featured beautiful pieces of sculptural silk gazar and draped organza, it was hard not to notice his models’ accoutrements: a human backpack or fannypack (in quite possibly the truest sense of the word).

While’s it’s easy to snigger, and believe us, the Twitter world really did, Owens was making a bold feminist statement. The designer told Dazed magazine that his spring 2016 collection was “about nourishment, sisterhood/motherhood and regeneration; women raising women, women becoming women, and women supporting women.”

In his show notes Owens added: ‘Straps can be about restraint but here they are all about support and cradling. Straps here become loving ribbons.’

We’re completely on board with the message Rick, but the models look more like extras from The Human Centipede than supportive besties.
