Emma Watson talks sexism in Hollywood (by numbers)

“I have experienced sexism in that I have been directed by male directors 17 times and only twice by women,” Emma Watson has said in a new interview, highlighting the inequalities that exist for females working in movies.

“Of the producers I’ve worked with 13 have been male and only one has been a woman,” Watson continued in an article for The Guardian that includes testimonials from women in film about how they’re treated in Hollywood.

The 25-year-old notes that she has been, so far, pretty lucky compared to other women who have been turned away simply because of their gender.

“I have always insisted on being treated equally and have generally won that equality,” she explained.

The Harry Potter star says that her main problem comes from “the media, where I have been treated so incredibly differently from my male co-stars.”

Even when Emma launched the HeForShe campaign in September 2014, a campaign which is aimed to motivate men and boys to push to end gender equality – she couldn’t help but notice the lack of women surrounding her.

“I think my work with the UN has probably made me even more aware of the problems. I went out for a work dinner recently. It was seven men… and me.”

But the actress ended on a positive note, bigging up some of her favourite male directors who are alleviating the problem.

“Some of the best feminists I have encountered are men, like Steve Chbosky who directed me in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and director James Ponsoldt who I am working with at the moment [on The Circle],” she said.
