Feeling the LoVe in Louis Vuitton

With the incredibly chic Alison and David Gillson. (My handbag is a beautiful LV piece and the skirt is by Gavin Rajah.)There are few houses in the history of fashion that can claim the prestige, desirability and instant recognition of Louis Vuitton. Having started as a French luggage company in the mid-1800s, the brand has since become so renowned for its stylish products that you only need to see a corner of its famed monogram to imagine a world of luxury, creativity and adventure.

And it’s not only for this that South Africans hold the brand dear. The launch of the Sandton store a decade ago was a grand affair for reasons beyond the beauty and craftsmanship of its offerings – Louis Vuitton has always been linked to explorers, pioneers and travel, and it was, appropriately one of the very first great international houses to invest in our country.

So it was a privilege – and a major thrill – to attend the reopening of the vastly enlarged Louis Vuitton store in Sandton City’s new Diamond Walk this week. The red carpet thronged with beautiful people, champagne and conversation flowed, and all eyes were on the latest handbags, scarves, watches, jewellery and sunglasses.

You might have expected things to be formal, but quite the opposite prevailed – the mood was light, bright and inviting, and the dress code ranged from hip and chic (I’m looking at you, Lalla Hirayama and Chris Nkosi!) and creative (check out Lira and Louise Carver) to sparkling (Maira Koutsoudakis), classic (Danny Kaye) and cute (Terry Pheto).

I was particularly fascinated by the fabulous new men’s section, and the likes of the infinitely charming Maps Maponye (looking resplendent in new LV shoes), obviously agreed. South African men are an extremely stylish bunch and it’s taken a long time for them to benefit from the kind of choices we ladies take for granted.
