Budget hair guide for luxurious locks

Hot hair at half the price? Yes, that’s right! We asked hair pro Shelene Shaer from Tanaz Hair, Body and Nails for her tips on how to get luxurious locks… for less.

Work your natural texture

You can’t fake a great cut, but you can skimp on the extras! “Rather skip the blowdry and let your locks ‘airdry’ or ask an apprentice to dry your hair for you at a lower rate,” explains Shelene. Your pocket will thank you and you’ll save your hair from the heat exposure (bonus!).

Fringe benefits

“If you have a good relationship with your hairdresser have a discussion about maintaining you fringe… for free,” says Shelene. A little trim can literally transform your look!

Know where to invest

A good shampoo and condition will take you far. “Invest in the best products your budget allows. Good quality basics lay the foundation for luscious locks. And if your hair and scalp are shiny and healthy you can skip splurging on styling products,” advises Shelene.

Double up

Got coils? Stock up on sulphate-free ‘dual-purpose’ products. “A co-wash formula is a great example,” says Shelene. “Not only will it boost shine, it will give moisture to your scalp too.”

Strategic colour

Saving on salon colour? Yes, it’s possible! “To maintain colour ask your stylist to dye your ‘halo’ only. You’ll give your hair overall glow without the cost of dying your whole head,” explains Shelene. “Colouring your fringe and your parting will also refresh your hue without having to dye your entire head.”

Straighten up

Seeking straight locks but can’t afford a full-on Brazilian blowout? “Ask your stylist to ‘Brazilian’ your fringe and side burns,” suggests Shelene. It’ll cut your styling time by half and you won’t have to battle with frizz.
