Review: The Temporary Bride: A memoir of love and food in Iran by Jennifer Klinec

When 30-something Jennifer Klinec abandons her job working for an investment bank to open a cooking school, she has no idea that this one move will change the course of her life forever.

A seasoned traveller who has sampled the delights of many a foreign country, Jennifer has an insatiable appetite for food. And it’s this very appetite that inspires the Londoner to close up shop, pack her bags and set off for Iran, the home of traditional Persian cuisine. With her hijab in place, it is there where she meets Vahid and his family, her hosts and teachers for the next few weeks. Although Vahid is uncertain of this independent woman, his mother soon warms to her and Jennifer is slowly introduced to the recipes of the land. As her skills and cooking repertoire begin to grow, so too does an attraction between Jennifer and Vahid. If only they can stand strong against the harsh Iranian laws and customs holding them back.

Easy-to-read, enjoyable and down to earth, The Temporary Bride: A memoir of love and food in Iran gives an inside look into the harsh laws of Iran and interlaces it with fantastic imagery of food, culture and love. And we like that it’s a memoir! For more about the author Jennifer Klinec, visit her website.
