Go with the ‘Fro

Want your ‘Fro to reach new heights? We asked hair expert Brian Warfield from Tanaz Hair, Body & Nails (011) 786 2976 for his top tips on caring for your tight curls. Get ready, this is your new go-to guide to rocking ultra curly hair!

Get the basics right

The key to maintaining naturally curly hair is moisture, moisture and more moisture! “You need to make sure you use a good moisturising shampoo and conditioner when you wash your hair. And don’t forget boost your moisture levels by using a moisturising treatment on a regular basis,” says Brian.

Deep cleanse

Got product build-up? Make sure you use a sulphate-free ‘pre-cleansing’ treatment on your locks before you shampoo. “A clean scalp and clean hair makes for a healthy hair environment. Try not to allow product to build up on your hair as this clogs the hair shaft and makes it look dull,” says Brian.

Dab don’t rub

You can towel-dry your naturally curly hair but it’s the way you do it that’s important. “Dab strands firmly but gently to remove any excess water. This prevents excessive tangling which will make your life easier!” explains Brian.

Boost your curls

If you have a tight curl pattern opt for a product that moisturises while defining your curls. “While it’s difficult to get good curl definition from tight curls (especially if the hair is short) elevated moisture levels in the hair will activate the curl much more effectively,” says Brain.

If you have corse curls

DO avoid protein treatments because they make the hair hard. 2.

DON’T use oils! Some people apply oil to their hair thinking this will take care of their dryness issue but it doesn’t. Only moisture can do that.

DON’T use hair food as it doesn’t penetrate the hair shaft. When it comes to tight coils, it just sits on the surface of the hair and prevents moisture from being absorbed  leaving you with strands that feel ‘dry’.
