Salon know-how

Before you go to your next appointment, read this list! It’s just a few things your stylist would like you to know

Bring pictures. It helps!

If you’re looking for a new style, nothing conveys the message better than an image. “Once we see What you’re looking for, we can discuss the best way to interpret the look for your hair, colouring and face shape,” explains Justine Taitz of Tanaz Hair Body and Nails (011 786 2976).

Ask your stylist to repeat back what you’ve said

Sometimes communication mishaps lead to hair disasters. Make sure your stylist knows what a ‘small trim’ or a bold new colour means to you. And don’t be afraid to correct or query what they say!

Tipping isn’t essential

If you feel awkward at the end of your appointment, here’s the lowdown on tipping. “There’s no expectation to tip your stylist, although some people do,” says Justine. “If, however, you appreciate the time an apprentice or basin staffer has spent on your hair washing massaging or dye job, it’s a great way to show gratitude. Tips often range between R10-R50.”

Be honest when you break up with your stylist

“We really appreciate honesty when people don’t come back,” says Justine. “To make it easier, you can say something along the line of, ‘I’m not sure you understood what I said about my cut/colour/style and this has been ongoing. I might try another stylist to suit my personality and needs.’ This prevents that awkward situation when you bump into a customer in the mall and she clearly has a new hairstyle – that you didn’t create!”

Be on time

But if you can’t, call in advance to make sure the stylist can still see you without messing around other clients. “Stylists will always try to make a plan for you – if they have some warning,” explains Justine.

Research the salon’s rates beforehand

Most salons offer a complimentary consultation where they evaluate and discuss your hair’s texture and needs. “This is your chance to mention your budget, so that you can discuss exactly what’s going to be done and what it will cost,” advises Justine. You should receive a printed quotation at the end of your consultation so that you can see the breakdown and avoid a nasty surprise at the end.”

There’s no such thing as oversharing

“We want to build a relationship with you,” says Justine. “So, like any friendship, we’d love to find out more about you. What makes you happy? What are you interested in? It’s great when you feel safe in the salon to discuss things that are on your mind. We’re there for you and we’re listening!” And the more your stylist knows about you, the better they’re able to craft a look that suits you and your lifestyle.

A gift? For me?

If you feel that your relationship with your stylist is a good one, gifts are a great way to show your appreciation. “They’re certainly not expected, but they do make us feel special,” explains Justine. “It shows us that you noticed the extra care and attention we put into your hair.”
