Emma Watson’s speech reminds the world what feminism really means

Recently, celebrities have been giving some alarming answers to the question ‘Are you a feminist?’. A number of them seem to believe that in order to give yourself that title, you have to hate men, but as Emma Watson points out, ‘feminism is by definition the belief that women should have equal rights and opportunities.’ Thankfully, there are also a good number of famous figures who are proudly declaring what they stand for (Remember the VMA performance when the word ‘feminist’ appeared boldly behind Beyoncé?), and Emma Watson has joined those ranks by delivering a powerful speech to the UN about how sexism has affected her personally, how gender stereotypes can harm men, too, and about HeForShe, which is ‘a solidarity movement, a partnership between women and men, based on a shared commitment to fight the persisting inequalities faced by women and girls.’
