How to remove a knot in your hair

Even the most hair dedicated amongst us can get knots and removing them without damaging your hair can be tricky. Here’s how to remove them safely and pain free!

1. Start by isolating the piece of hair that has the knot from the rest of your hair. Clip or tie the rest of your hair away from the knot – try to not to have any hair whatsoever in the strand that is not involved in the knot.

2. Using your thumb and index finger, starting at the very bottom of the strand, gently tease the hair apart. Be very patient here, as pulling too hard could break the hair. As you free bits of the knot, move upwards, continuing the process.

3. If you have a knot that won’t budge, then try and add a drop or two of silicone based hair shine. If you don’t have any silicone at hand, you can try some olive or almond oil. This will help create some slip on the caught-up strands.

4. Once you’ve finger-combed the knot you can tackle it with a wide-toothed comb. Using the same process as before, slowly move up the hair shaft until you’ve untangled the whole knot.

5. When the knot has been completely removed, run a finer-toothed comb or brush through the hair. If you are prone to knots, using a leave-in conditioner or silicone-based hair shine serum will help prevent them.
