Angelina Jolie leads global summit to end sexual violence in conflict

Angelina Jolie isn’t just a movie star, red carpet darling and mother – she’s also a humanitarian. This week she fulfilled her role as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees at the four-day long global summit to end sexual violence in conflict.

The summit is a conference co-chaired Angelina and Foreign Sec William Hague, where officials from 140 countries around the world discuss the issue of sexual violence in war zones. The aim of the conference is to implement prevention of sexual violence in conflict as a compulsory part of the training of peacekeeping troops and police forces.

She’s worked on the campaign for two years and is trying to come up with an international agreement surrounding the standards of investigating sexual violence in places of conflict.

In light of her work for the cause, Angelina has been named an honorary Dame in Britain.

The 39-year-old Oscar winner, who is the co-founder of the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative (PVSI), said: “To receive an honour related to foreign policy means a great deal to me, as it is what I wish to dedicate my working life to. Working on PVSI and with survivors of rape is an honour in itself. I know that succeeding in our goals will take a lifetime, and I am dedicated to it for all of mine.”

Angelina – who cannot be addressed as Dame because she is a foreign citizen – received the honour while in London with Brad Pitt.
