GLAM Chat: Toya Delazy

Last month, Mxit launched its Mxit Music Studio, giving Mxit users access to 40 00 free songs. Toya Delazy, a former GLAMOUR Woman of the Year, was one of the artists whose music was given away for free – she gave away 5 000 copies of her single “Memoriam” – and other artists include Zakes Bantwini, Mafikizolo, iFani, Khuli Chana, Euphonik, AKA, Liquideep and The Kiffness.

GLAMOUR recently had a chat with Toya about the initiative and what we can expect from her in the future.

GLAMOUR:

You’ve just given away 5,000 copies of your new single “Memoriam” via Mxit’s new Music Studio App. How did the partnership come about?

Toya: Mxit approached Delazy Entertainment with the desire to work with me and my music and we decided to join them on their mission. We found their initiative very innovative.

GLAMOUR: As an artist, how do you feel about giving away music for free? Do you think it lets you have more control over how your material is released, or gets people more interested in your work?

Toya: Well, it’s for free for the fans. I love blessing my fans and “Memoriam” is also one of those songs that is for anyone going through a loss – loss is something that affects everyone. Sharing this specific song for free through Mxit is more of a gift. It’s helped me through my life so I want to share it on a larger scale, in a controlled environment, in high quality MP3.

GLAMOUR: You’re known for your unique style as much as you’re known for your unique sound. How do you think your style has evolved?

Toya: It’s growing with my mind, with my loves and hates and my experiences. My style is constantly evolving as I constantly grow.

GLAMOUR: You’re currently working on your second album – what can we expect to hear?

Toya: I’m producing an album that’s going to be fuelled with my energy. Now that I’ve gotten into producing, I can put the music down easily on my own the moment I feel it. Whether I’m in the plane or on the side of the curb in Bangkok, if I feel the moment to write, I switch Cubase on and tell my story. The songs on this album are all from personal experiences and let me tell you, it’s been one hell of a journey!
