The film follows the moving story of Philomena Lee (Judi Dench), an Irish-Catholic mother who conceives a son out of wedlock. Bound by the doctrine of her church and judged by her harsh, penitential community, Philomena is forced to give the child up for adoption and soon after he is born, he is taken to America. Several years later she meets Martin Sixsmith (Steve Coogan), a reporter working for the BBC, and despite her having signed an adoption contract excluding her from her child’s life, the two embark on a quest to find her son. The film is based on the brilliant 2009 investigative book The Lost Child of Philomena Lee(Pan Macmillan, R213), written by real-life BBC correspondent Martin Sixsmith and brought to life by the magic of director Stephen Frears.
