The Style Blogger Starter
GLAMOUR is searching for the next big blogging talent, which is why we – in association with Orange – called on our readers to send us links to their blogs to stand a chance of winning big.
Now, we’ve selected the super-talented five finalists, and here they are! Their blogs show off their personal style, writing skill, and passion for fashion – but now we want to see them taking all that to the next level. To show that they’ve got what it takes to blog with the best of them, the fashionable five will compete in four weekly tasks, starting right now.
Our Style Blogger Starter finalists were given the task of taking a set of five to eight street style photos according to a theme of their choice. What you see above are the pictures they took – and what you’ll read below is what the GLAMOUR team thought about them.
What we had to say
Jess chose the theme ‘leather’ and we loved the outfits that she found. She did a good job of taking her pictures against solid backgrounds that allowed them to stand out, and took some great detail shots that showed off interesting textures. Our only advice to her would be to choose her detail shots carefully – an image that highlights beautiful earringa that may have been lost in the main image is great, but an additional photo of shoes that were already clearly visible in the original picture isn’t really necessary.
We liked Sebu’s theme – ‘royal blue’ – and she did a good job of finding subjects whose outfits fit into it well, but she needs to plan her pictures a little more carefully next time. Making sure that the people in your pictures smile right at the camera and stand up straight, against a plain background, goes a long way to taking a more striking photo.
Leigh chose the theme ‘models off duty’, and we were impressed with her use of solid, contrasting backgrounds that allowed her pictures’ subjects, and their outfits, to really ‘pop’. She got them to stand in flattering poses – trust us, and trust us, the people your street style shots will always thank you for this later, while everyone who sees the pictures will find them more appealing – perhaps without even knowing why. We’d suggest that next time she skips the detail shots – at the moment, they’re just enlargements of pictures that already show off all of the looks pretty clearly.
Zaahirah found some great outfits and did a good job of posing her subjects. We’d definitely advise her to lean more towards the uncluttered look of the two images in which the girls in the pictures are standing front of a dark-coloured garage door, with their clothing shown off beautifully. Her theme, ‘print accents’, didn’t come across very cleary in the pictures, as we kept getting distracted by individual trends like aztec and animal print, but that didn’t take away from the fact that the images worked well as a group.
We liked that Phume found lots of variations on the theme ‘monochrome’ and she photographed some great outfits on some well-posed people! Our suggestion to her would be to be even more discerning next time – every photographer finds, after a street style scouting mission, that one or two of her shots don’t quite fit in with the rest, be it because they aren’t quite on-theme or because something as simple as the picture’s lighting detracts from the look. Don’t be afraid to discard these – it’ll make for a much better final collection of images!
And the winner is…
