GLAM Chat with Topshop’s Creative Director, Kate Phelan

After years of waiting, Topshop has finally opened its doors on South African soil – and we were lucky enough to attend the opening! With stock coming in from the UK every week, almost 70% of clothing being the same as in the London stores and the fact that you can use your Edgars card (and earn Thank You points when you swipe), what’s not to be excited about? To find out more about this momentous event, we briefly chatted to Topshop Creative Director, Kate Phelan about the launch of the first Topshop in SA, what exciting collaborations we have to look forward to and a bit about her personal style.

GLAMOUR: Firstly we’d like to say how very excited we are about the opening of Topshop! How did the decision come about to launch in SA?

Kate Phelan: After doing research in the market for a number of years and being approached by a number of businesses, we decided to partner with Edcon and and House of Busby due to their expertise in the market.

What can we expect from Topshop SA?

Topshop is a global brand that isn’t just about selling clothes. Product and first to market is a given but it’s also the whole package. A brave and irreverent approach to a store experience, brand marketing, designer collaborations and social media – delighting and exceeding our customer expectations. We will be offering the same in SA and around the world.

After seeing collaborations with Mary Kantrantzou and Christopher Kane – do we have more exciting collaborations to look forward to?

We are very excited to confirm JW Anderson collection is booked for SS13, hitting store end of Feb.

From British Vogue to Topshop, what advise can you give girls wanting to launch a career in fashion?

Make use of any opportunity to explore the world of fashion!

Where did your love for fashion start?

It started at a very early age, I remember looking through Vogue then dressing up and experimenting with clothes.

How would you describe your style?

I like to keep things simple, minimal and quite classic.
