Ladies, Meet Mr SA!

There are numerous benefits to being a GLAMOUR girl. One of them is getting to pick an attractive Man Candy Monday for our our readers’ viewing pleasure each week. What made the job even better was when I had the opportunity to chat to Andrew Govender, who was crowned Mr SA a week ago. This guy is definitely someone to keep your eye on – a true gentleman, with enough charm and wit to hold the Mr SA title.

What was the first thing that you did after you were crowned Mr SA?

I was immediately taken to interview after interview! It’s been really hectic since I won, but I’ve been trying to make the most of the entire experience. Lots of interviews, lots of new faces and not a lot of sleep!

A lot of GLAMOUR readers won’t be very familiar with Mr SA. What is it really all about?

It’s basically a search to find a young, driven and intelligent individual who can represent the youth of our country in a positive way

You’ve probably been very busy since the win. Have you had any time to digest the fact that you just won a national title?

No! (laughs). This has been such a mind-blowing experience. I couldn’t believe it when they announced me as Top 5, so winning was a complete shock to me. I was walking through my house the other day, and suddenly realised “Wow – I’m Mr South Africa”. It’s definitely going to take time for it to sink in!

What qualities set you apart from the other finalists?

I was always myself throughout the process – that might sound a bit cheesy, but it’s the truth. I’m extremely driven, and had the right amount of inner confidence to compete with all the other contestants. Also, I used my strengths to win over the judges in interviews. I never tried I don’t ever try to be the centre of attention… My parents raised me with the notion that you should never let anything get to your head.

What made you want to enter?

My mom, actually! Previously, I had entered a few other competitions, and my mom saw an advert for entrants for Mr SA 2012. She asked me to enter, so I decided to give it a try. I immediately thought to myself, “Did I just do that?”. (laughs) I’m really glad I did it though!

What sparked your interest in modelling?

I never really thought of modelling until I was scouted in a shopping mall. I come from a family where education is very important, so I studied to become an Actuarial Analyst – but I actually find modelling to be much harder than my day job! It’s a lot of fun, really a good form of escapism.

The modelling industry places a lot of emphasis on looks and physical perfection. Do you have a special grooming routine?

Not really. The most hardcore grooming item I own is a hairdryer!

What are the three things that you cant live without?

My parents, my bed and my iPhone.

For all our GLAMOUR readers who are eager to hunt you down after this, what are you looking for in a girl?

A great smile and a good personality. There have to be sparks between us – definitely a connection.

What’s your idea of a perfect date?

A great romantic location, maybe a good restaurant. Something laid-back and chilled – and there has to be dessert!

Where do you see yourself in five years?

In five years, maybe winning an Oscar or two! I really want to get into acting so I hope to see my face plastered all over Hollywood by then! I’d also like to be a qualified Actuary. I hope that I’ve proven that you just need to be ambitious, determined and resilient to make a name for yourself – I want to inspire others!

What motto do you live by?

“The will to persevere is often the difference between failure and success.”
