Keep blackheads at bay

Blackheads are blocked pores – and the black you see is actual oil and dirt. Yes, we know, yuk!

They usually appear on the nose and T-zone because this is where the skin is oiliest. To keep them at bay, you have to work at it. There are quick fixes, but you’ll need to keep those pores clear to keep them away for good.

The quickfix:

The best quick treatment we’ve found is Cettua’s Silky and Clear Nose Strips with Charcoal, (R39.99 for 6 strips available at Clicks). You simply wet the strip, apply it to your nose, and wait for it to dry. The blackheads get pulled out when your remove the dry strip. Infused with charcoal (a great disinfectant and oil absorber), peppermint to control oil production, and witch hazel, which has great astringent and anti-inflammatory properties, the strips are very effective.

The long term fix:

Long term you need to make sure you thoroughly cleanse your face everyday, and use an exfoliator once or twice a week (depending on how oily your skin is). We love Neutrogena’s new Deep Clean Long-Lasting Shine Control Daily Scrub and 2-in-1 Cleanser and Mask (R74.95). Using an oil-free moisturiser will keep your oil levels in check.

If you have very oily skin, keep a pack of oil absorbing sheets in your handbags to touch-up during the day. And before you know it your skin will be crystal clear with no blackheads in sight!
